Primary Years Programme (PYP)

Primary Years Program

Learning at Immanuel Lutheran School Gawler takes place within the form of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP).
The IB Learner Profile identifies that students completing IB programs strive to be:
  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective
You can read more about the Learner Profile in the flyer attached below.

The Primary Years Program develops these qualities in students by outlining:

  • What students will learn;
  • How they will learn best; and
  • How we will know what they have learned.

Much of the learning that takes place within the PYP is inquiry-based learning.  This approach to learning harnesses the spirit of investigation, creating an interesting, engaging and meaningful curriculum that uses children’s questions as a starting point for effective learning. As students move through the process of inquiry, they can draw on several ways of investigating and expressing their growing understandings.  Inquiry-based learning views children as constructors of their own knowledge, rather than recipients of someone else’s.  Students’ inquiries help them develop subject-specific skills and understandings, but also develop an understanding of broader, transdisciplinary concepts.

These concepts are:

  • Form:  What is it like?
  • Function: How does it work?
  • Causation: Why is it like it is?
  • Change: How is it changing?
  • Connection: How is it connected to other things?
  • Perspective: What are the points of view?
  •  Responsibility: What is our responsibility?
  • Reflection: How do we know?

By understanding these concepts, students will have a greater understanding of the world, their place within it and the impact of global changes on our role in the world.

At Immanuel Lutheran School Gawler, we aim to develop inquiring and knowledgeable young people with a commitment to lifelong learning.   We achieve this through our use of the IB Primary Years Program, a challenging international curriculum that takes into account:

  • Intercultural understandings and respect
  •  Tolerance of other view points
  • The need for a more peaceful and sustainable world.

Supporting all of these programs is our Christian faith and the values this develops in students.
